Interior and Exterior Lighting Installations for Your Home
There are a number of beautiful internal and exterior installations that can help to improve, or even lower the cost of, the lighting and décor in your San Diego home. Some of the most common custom lighting solutions used in today’s modern home, each working with a unique and stylish purpose, include:
Lately, the trend in the lighting industry has been to replace ALL 12v and 120v incandescent & fluorescent lamps with the latest, greatest LED technology. Not only new LED fixtures are available, but LED retrofit trims can fit any existing recessed can lights without changing lamp sockets or voltages. LED is adaptable to most every lighting fixture made including landscape lights. Incandescent lamps are being phased out completely and most recessed can lights have either incandescent or fluorescent lamp sockets. LED lamp replacements simply fit right into existing lamp sockets for just about any fixture made, including 12v low voltage can lights. LED uses up to only 10% the energy required to power a standard lamp. Plus, they emit no heat into the room. They will lower your electric bill and last for up to 20 years without sacrificing looks or loss of light. LED provides better light with way less energy usage.
These lights are usually 120v transformed to 12v housings installed above the ceiling through an opening in the ceiling & are generally 4″ in diameter. The housings are fitted with a trim on the surface of the ceiling. The fixture needs approximately six inches of clearance. Insulation could be a factor with the fixture and could cause problems. There are insulation rated recessed fixtures available. A recessed lighting system sends light down in a straighter direction and is great for creating an accent, task, or ambient lighting in a room. These are generally designed to be more for pin point light & use a 12v, MR-16 lamp. There are also 120v recessed directional can lights available as well. But the 12v lights are designed more for accenting and use less electricity than standard incandescent lamps.
Can lights (also known as recessed lights) are another type of recessed lighting and are generally about 6″ in diameter. Many modern homes have can lights. These lights tend to look very compact and sophisticated, making them popular with homeowners.
Architectural lighting is mostly useful for creating ambient lighting. Generally, homeowners who want to minimize shadows and glares use architectural lighting. Some of the most common architectural lighting installations use soffits, coves and valances:
- Soffit lighting directs light downward and is located near the ceiling (in a cornice or soffit), washing the wall with light.
- Cove lighting directs light upward and integrates with a shelf, ledge or a recess on the wall.
- Valance lighting directs light upward and downward and looks great on a glass, metal or wood valance, mounted on a high wall or above a window.
With track lighting, a fixture “track” of determined length has to be suspended from or mounted to the ceiling. It can fit multiple attachable fixture heads which are adjustable in any direction in a linear housing system, and can work very well in any part of the house. Track lighting also works like accent lighting, depending on the fixture head or lamp. The advantage of using track lighting is that it’s connected to only one wire in one location in the room. Multiple fixture heads can be placed & aimed in many locations, depending on the length & direction of the running track.
This type of lighting can incorporate single puck-shaped fixtures or linear ones. This lighting is often used as task lighting, particularly for use in kitchens or offices.
These lighting fixtures are suspended from the ceiling. Lighting directs downward, generally over a structure like a kitchen island or a table. The pendant enhances the interior décor of the room, and provides task or ambient lighting.
Security lights are exterior fixtures that are placed in or over yards , porch ceiling or wall beside an exterior door. With security lighting, a homeowner can turn on the exterior lamp to see who is at the door, or before opening it, if they are automatic security lights which have a motion detection system built in. Any motion will activate them. There are also dusk till dawn fixtures available as well which turn on & off automatically with the detection of light & darkness. Dusk till dawn devises can be used for any type of outdoor fixtures when placed somewhere remotely.
