JD’s Blog | Popular Upgrades Have You Saying, “I Want That!” – But Do You Have Enough Amperage?
There are numerous upgrades that your local electrician can make to your home with regards to your electrical system. Here are some modern upgrades that are popular among homeowners in San Diego and across the USA.
Central Control Stations
There are several new wireless (Radio RA) devices that allow you to control all your lighting and equipment from a singular control panel. With a central control station in place, you can program various combinations of configurations and control it with a single touch! For example, you can preset entertainment devices to dim the lights to create the perfect atmosphere and, if you have a music system in place, you can even program it to play light music.
The presetting options are limitless, like programming bedtime lighting so that the panel shuts every nonessential light in the house or presetting party lights that will shine exactly the way you want them to. A central control station also makes it easier for you conserve electricity by conveniently allowing you to switch off a light upstairs that you forgot to turn off. You can actually operate this entire system with your smart phone!
Home Entertainment Centers
Televisions, stereos, DVD players, and surround sound. With a home entertainment center, you could maximize the return for those purchases. Ask yourself: what could be better than wireless speakers to allow the sound to flow freely throughout your home?
Home Security System
It’s impressive to see all the features the latest home security systems have to offer. New electronic security systems are able to scare off intruders with the help of motion detectors that illuminate the surroundings of the house in an instant. There are inexpensive Internet cameras available as well, but I have some not ready due to bugs. They will get much better with time. For a completely professionally installed security system, call a licensed low voltage contractor.
However, adding some of these various systems can put a huge strain on older electrical systems! Older systems are usually supplied with anywhere from 60-100 amps, which just isn’t enough to drive all these and other modern appliances and devices. One hundred amps may be enough power if your larger appliances use natural gas. But if you have an electric oven, electric cook top, central air, electric water heater, electric dryer, Jacuzzi spa, welder (hey, some guys weld in their garages), which all use 240v and run the amperage gamut from 30 to 50 amps, each, then most likely, you’ve probably already got a 200 amp panel. And as a side note, many older apartment units have only 30 amps of power for the entire space. That’s the electrical equivalent to one single clothes dryer!
Consider upgrading your electrical services to 200 amps or more in order to be completely sure that all your power needs are being met. Share such ideas and plans to upgrade with your local electrician to get the best solution but, just remember, spending money now to expand your electrical supply will save you time and money in the long run. I always like to say, “It’s better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it.”
