Electrical Upgrades 101
Upgrading your electrical service means that you are upgrading your electrical system to bring more power into your home. Generally, an upgrade involves some level of rewiring and the replacing of electrical components to add power to your home. We’ll discuss these topics, in turn, below.
We are frequently called by customers requesting a house rewire. The good news is that rewiring your whole house is not always needed. There are many other ways to upgrade your homes electrical system to meet your family’s electrical needs and keep your home and family safe. Hiring a licensed San Diego electrician will help to ensure that the upgrade meets electrical standards.
Whole House Rewiring
Rewiring your whole house can involve a complete replacement of the panel, wires, and the circuit breaker. It may be necessary to replace all inside and outside wires, including knobs and tubes, and socket boards around your house. Only a professional, licensed San Diego electrician can best determine the extent of replacement needed.
If your outlets and wiring don’t heat up, then you may only need a partial rewiring. This process is less complicated than a whole house rewiring but with your updated, new panel and circuit breaker, your house will have more power without overloading and, more importantly, safe from any possible fire.
The function of a circuit breaker is to trip off (or “break”) whenever there is an overload of power to prevent damage to electrical devices connected to any outlets in your house. When this happens too often, you need to check where there is a weak connection or an overload. The electrician you call for help will replace the fuse and/or reset the breaker.
To add more power to your home, you may need to install:
- a new exterior cable drop,
- new meter socket,
- new and labeled circuit breakers for all circuits,
- a new circuit breaker panel,
- intersystem bonding termination device, and
- other fixtures
Hiring a San Diego electrician is recommended because they can explain exactly what you need to add more power to your home.
Electrical Upgrade Recommendations
Here are some recommendations your house may need for a complete and proper electrical upgrade:
- Service/ panel upgrade: Old panels do not have space for addition of new circuits so you may need a new one
- Additional circuits: You may need additional circuits to max up the panel
- Replace devices: There may be a need to completely replace electrical devices to upgrade the system
- Adding grounding: Your house might need additional grounding to allow you to swap a two-prong outlet to a three-prong one
